QUESTION

Why do you have to audition for one class but not for another? Is there an advantage to taking a class you must audition for to get in?

ANSWER

At Steppenwolf Classes West, although we don't have 'levels' per se, we do believe that the work in our Scene Study Classes has always benefited from our attention to a 'chemistry' of commensurate ability and experience in our rosters. This usually requires an audition so the teachers can decide not only which teacher you might currently most benefit from, but which students would be best placed together for their growth.

In our exploration of the Improv and Viewpoints world, mixing artists of
wide ranging experience and / or technique levels together is, in most cases, actually helpful. Viewpoints requires a bit of bravery, a lot of movement and tons of imagination. There's never a need to audition for that.

And the Improvisation class is basically about the same things. This is why neither of these classes require the teachers to meet with the students beforehand or see their work. The sole exception to the above is our VIEWPOINTS IN REHEARSAL CLASS, which is an advanced exploration class, by invitation only, of our more experienced viewpointers.

Once a student is accepted into the school, they are free to go from
teacher to teacher depending on recommendations from their individual
teachers. For instance, once a new student takes the Viewpoints Intensive,
there's really no need to repeat it.

However, the scene study classes shift and change with each session. Enrolling in these classes, we've found, isn't a repetition--it is an ongoing practice of your craft that our SCW veterans have found extremely valuable.
