Steppenwolf Theatre Company, founded in 1976 is
America’s premier ensemble theater, renowned for its great
acting of challenging material in an intimate theater space. Now
a company of thirty-five theater artists whose strengths include
acting, directing, playwriting and literary adaptation, Steppenwolf
celebrates ensemble acting with rich, intense performances that
advance the vitality and diversity of American theater. Among many
accolades, Steppenwolf has received the National Medal of Arts,
five Tony Awards, four Obie Awards and sixty-six Joseph Jefferson
Awards.
Steppenwolf is a proud member of the Chicago arts
community, where it provides arts education through the Cross-Town
Teen ensemble, Teacher Workshops and Steppenwolf for Young Adults
productions, all part of the Arts Exchange program. World premiere
works for the American stage are supported through the New Plays
Initiative. Emerging Chicago theater companies are hosted and mentored
through the Visiting Company Initiative. Professional actors receive
training in ensemble acting technique through The School at Steppenwolf.
Furthermore, Steppenwolf develops and constructs innovative inter-arts
performance with its Films and Traffic Series.
Through the continued support of over 22,000 subscribers,
and an annual audience totaling 207,000, Steppenwolf continues to
program innovative productions in all three of our performances
spaces. World premieres and new productions of classics are seen
in our Downstairs Theatre, newly-renovated Upstairs Theatre and

Founded in 1998, The School at Steppenwolf is a
training residency for professional actors to immerse themselves
in the ensemble traditions, values and methods that make Steppenwolf
unique. Each summer a class of 24 students is invited by audition
to study in Chicago with Steppenwolf Ensemble Members and other
professional artists. The 10 week period is divided into 3 trimesters,
running Monday through Friday from 8:00am–5:00pm. Students
study the following acting methods, among others: Viewpoints, Meisner,
Faith/Naïveté, Improvisation and Feldenkrais, with a
strong focus on intensive scene–study. Master classes and
audition workshops with ensemble members are also offered. Students
are encouraged to attend all performances at Steppenwolf during
their residency at The School.
All professional and student actors with a high
school diploma are encouraged to apply. Auditions are held in Houston,
Chicago and New York City.
To receive an audition, fill out and return the
application, fully completed with the non–refundable $50.00
application fee. Video– taped auditions are accepted, however
it is highly recommended that you audition in person. Audition spots
are limited.
Tuition for the summer program is $2,500.00. Tuition
covers all classes. Students are responsible for obtaining their
own room and board. Some scholarship money is available. Decisions
will be entirely need–based.
